England win Rugby World Cup with 33-13 triumph over Canada

England turned pain into glory as they won their third Women’s Rugby World Cup with an incredible 33-13 triumph over Canada in the final at Allianz Stadium.

Asia Hogan-Rochester opened the scoring for the Maple Leafs, but the Red Roses soon hit back through Ellie Kildunne, Amy Cokayne and Alex Matthews.

Their lead was extended after the break through Abbie Ward before Hogan-Rochester's second sparked nerves.

England rode a player disadvantage before Matthews got her second with 11 minutes to go to seal a famous victory in front of a world record crowd and banish the defeat to New Zealand three years ago.

Canada were expected to start quickly so it should have been no surprise that Hogan-Rochester darted over on five minutes in the corner.

However, with the vast majority of the 81,885 inside Allianz Stadium supporting the Red Roses, the atmosphere was one of shock not awe.

That all changed as Kildunne received the ball from Natasha Hunt, the first of two assists for the scrum half.

The full-back ran rings around Canada’s defence before dotting down under the posts to bring England level before Zoe Harrison did what her Saracens teammate Sophie de Goede could not do and kicked the conversion to move England into the lead.

The Red Roses thought they were over again, but Tatyana Heard’s try was scratced off for a knock on in the build-up.

It mattered only a small amount as England got a lineout 10 metres from the tryline and did what they do best as Cokayne dotted down to extend the world number ones' lead.

Each side traded errors but Canada were unable to launch a meaningful attack before they had to defend again.

On 27 minutes, Matthews went over for a try in her fourth consecutive World Cup final as England looked to be in control.

Canada’s quick passing had not worked for them in a cauldron of noise and so they turned to building the phases, but even then, they saw a turnover on England’s tryline mean an opportunity went by.

In need of stability and points on the board, the Maple Leafs turned to the posts and De Goede kicked a clean penalty to cut the gap to 13.

The advantage could have been greater however Cokayne’ second try from a lineout was ruled out after Zoe Aldcroft was judged to have obstructed Canada.

It meant the score stayed at 21-8 at the break, with England in a healthy position with 40 to play.

That position looked even rosier when Abbie Ward powered over on 50 minutes for the Red Roses' fourth.

However, a yellow card to Hannah Botterman for a dangerous tackle minutes later allowed Canada to hit back as Hogan-Rochester got their second of the game.

As the Maple Leafs sensed the opportunity, the triumph in a scrum was celebrated as vociferously by Player of the Match Sadia Kabeya as she would a try.

It meant that when a try for the Red Roses then came, the celebrations were vociferous as Matthews got her second.

Harrison's fourth conversion of five proved to be the final points of an all-out final as England drunk in a famous victory.
