Megan Jones has been named captain of the Red Roses for 2026

A lynchpin of the England squad, the 29-year-old replaces 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup-winning captain Zoe Stratford, who is expecting her first child.

“Firstly, I’m really excited for Zoe and wish her and Strats every happiness on their news,” Jones said.

“It’s a huge honour to have been named captain of the Red Roses. Mitch and I have built a strong relationship over the past three years and it’s a great feeling to have his trust to lead the group along with a tight leadership team.

“I’m buzzing to get back in camp with the girls for the Six Nations. I’ll just be the same old Meg and know I’ll have great support from Zoe, the leaders and the whole squad.”

Jones steps up from her vice-captaincy role following a stellar 2025, which saw her help secure a Six Nations Grand Slam and a Rugby World Cup winners’ medal, as well as earning a place on the World Player of the Year shortlist.

She made her England debut aged just 18 in 2015 before going on to become a two-time Olympian with Great Britain.

Starting 12 of the Red Roses’ 13 matches in 2025, the centre has also proved influential in Premiership Women’s Rugby, making seven appearances in Trailfinders Women’s pursuit of a top-four finish.

Jones will be supported by vice-captains Amy Cokayne and Alex Matthews, both of whom have earned more than 80 caps for England.

Head coach John Mitchell said: “Meg reflects our values; her personality, capabilities and leadership are hugely valuable to the Red Roses squad. She brings an infectious energy that lifts those around her and has had a huge influence on our culture and connections over the past three years. Not only is Meg highly respected, but she also consistently produces high-level performances and leads by example every time she takes to the field.”
